A cult favorite in New York City for more than 25 years, the Halal Guys are spreading their addictive white sauce on beef gyros and chicken platters far and wide.
San Jose was the first location to open in Northern California, followed by San Francisco and Berkeley.
Sunnyvale is next, with an eatery coming to the Cherry Orchard Center on El Camino Real. It’s going into the strip between the Trader Joe’s and Starbucks there.
Founded in 1990 as a single food cart, the Halal Guys — Egyptian immigrants Muhammed Abouelenein, Abdelbaset Elsayed and Ahmed Elsaka — quickly found a following by serving halal dishes to Manhattan’s Muslim cabdrivers. Halal refers to food prepared according to Islamic law.
The New Yorkers have become one of the most reviewed U.S. restaurants on Yelp.
Stay tuned for updates on the Sunnyvale opening.
